China Unionpay(CUP) and MEPS (Malaysian Electronic Payment System (1997) Sdn Bhd) held in Kuala Lumpur a ceremony for launching ATM cash withdrawal services on November 29, 2007. Vice minister Dato Lin Yangcai of Malaysia Ministry of Tourism, Chinese Ambassador Cheng Yonghua to Malaysia, CUP Chairman Liu Tinghuan and YBhg Dato’ Mohd Hata Robani, group managing director of MEPS, attended the ceremony and made speeches respectively. From the date, the three major participating banks of MEPS ---- Hong Leong Bank, Maybank and Public Bank, will launch CUP card acceptance services on their own ATMs. CUP cardholders will be able to withdraw cash from 50% of ATMs within Malaysia. Some other participating banks of MEPS will also launch this service, finally making CUP card acceptable to all ATMs in Malaysia.
CUP Chairman Liu Tinghuan said, CUP attaches great importance to the role Malaysian market has played in the development of CUP’s overseas businesses; at the end of 2005, the launching of POS service by CUP in Malaysia has promoted a rapid growth of transaction volumes, which has facilitated the trade development and visit exchange and helped deepen the bilateral friendships; the launching of ATM cash withdrawal service in Malaysia symbolizes an all-round development phase for CUP card in the country. As MEPS is the only ATM network service provider in Malaysia and with the deepening of cooperation, the acceptance of CUP card at Malaysian ATMs is bound to prevail.
“We’re very pleased to cooperate with CUP and establish a long-term, friendly and mutually beneficial partnership. We’re also delighted to popularize CUP card services among our participating banks to bring more convenient ATM cash withdrawal services to Chinese CUP cardholders in Malaysia. More banks will start accepting CUP card in the future.” said YBhg Dato’ Mohd Hata Robani.
