By the end of April, 2008, the number of engaged merchants of CUP cards in Japan has broken through 10000, ATMs over 46000, which will provide more convenience for Chinese businessmen, visitors and students in Japan in using cards for payments.
The over 10000 engaged merchants that accept CUP cards in Japan are primarily located in cities like Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya where Chinese visitors frequented, covering duty-free shops at airports, chain stores for electronic appliances, department stores, brand franchise shops, and hotels. In Japan, there are 46000 ATMs that are accessible to CUP cards, taking up 1/3 of the total number of ATMs in Japan. Those ATMs are mainly distributed at bus stations, 7-11 convenient shops, malls and bank networks in larges cities such as Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya. Those ATMs are facilitative for Chinese visitors to look for and convenient for use since most of them are installed with Chinese menu.
Direct exchange between Yen and RMB can be realized when CUP cards are used for payments in Japan or cash withdrawal on ATMs, which helps to avoid the risk of exchanging rate fluctuation and to save the currency conversion charges that may take up 1%-2% of the transaction volume.
At present, the transaction volume of CUP cards in Japan grows with a rapid speed that every 4 months the volume doubles. In particular, the Spring Festival of 2008 eyes the volume soaring with 100 million yen every two days in peak period.
Now, the Chinese CUP card holders have attracted more Japanese merchants’ attention as new source of customers. Services to CUP card holders in Japan are strengthened: signs of CUP cards acceptance are put in the most prominent places, people who can speak Chinese are recruited as staff members and all kinds of discount preference for holders are launched.
Except the convenience for Chinese people using cards in Japan, CUP also provides Japanese and overseas Chinese who go to China for work or traveling advantages in bankcard payments, and cooperates with Japanese financial institutions to issue CUP standard credit cards in Japan.
In the future, CUP will further the development of CUP cards acceptance network in Japan to meet the diverse needs of Chinese card holders in using bankcards, and strengthen the cooperation with Japanese financial institutions to increase the issuance of CUP standards cards in Japan, playing more significant role in the non-governmental exchanges between China and Japan.
