On April 23, 2008, CUP announced that CUP cards are officially accepted by Cambodian merchants and ATMs, which signals that CUP cards are now accepted in 27 countries and regions around the world.
The acceptance of CUP cards in Cambodia is realized under the cooperation of Cambodia Bank Plc, one of the largest commercial banks in Cambodia. All the 500 merchants and 28 ATMs under Cambodia Bank Plc are now open for CUP card acceptance, which take up 50% and 40% respectively of all the bankcard engaged merchants and ATMs in Cambodia. These ATMs and merchants are mainly located at airports, department stores, scenic spots and hotels which Chinese visitors frequented in Phnom Penh, the Capital of Cambodia, and Siem Reab, home to the famous Angkor Wat. Chinese menu is installed on the ATMs for convenience.
The acceptance of CUP cards in Cambodia is facilitative for Chinese people working or traveling in Cambodia. CUP and Cambodia Bank Plc state that in the future the two parties will keep strengthening the cooperation to develop the acceptance of CUP cards at more merchants and ATMs so that convenience in payment will be provided for more Chinese people who go to Cambodia.
It is reported that since 2004 CUP has been initiatively developing its international acceptance network of CUP cards to satisfy the growing demands of Chinese people in using bankcards abroad and to extend the services of domestic commercial banks beyond border. By the end of 2007, the number of engaged merchants, POS terminals and ATMs of CUP cards in foreign countries and regions reached 125,000, 174,000, and 366,000 respectively. Full acceptance of CUP cards in Hong Kong SAR and Macau SAR has been basically achieved and the engaged merchants in Singapore, Thailand and Japan are located in most of the places where Chinese visitors frequented. The Chinese people’s needs of using card abroad are satisfied since the layout of CUP network in foreign countries and regions is circled around the Chinese people’s road map of doing business or traveling abroad. Besides, using CUP cards for payment can be of substantial benefits for it may save 1%-2% currency conversion charge comparing with other payment channels.
