On June 16, 2008, China Unionpay announced that CUP cards are officially accepted on ATMs in Portugal, which marks that CUP cards are now open to acceptance in 28 countries and regions. Gao Zhanxiang, Chinese Ambassador to Portugal, and other leaders of CUP and CGD of Portugal presented at the initiation ceremony.

It is reported that the acceptance of CUP cards on Portugal ATMs is realized through cooperation between CUP and the largest retail banking of Portugal—CGD Bank. The operation covers all ATMs in Portugal on which cross-bank withdrawal is available. These ATMs belong to CGD Bank, and are spread over the territory of Portugal with a total number of 13 thousand.

At that time, CUP card holders can withdraw Euro in Portugal with CUP cards issued by domestic commercial banks. CUP logo will be displayed on the ATM screen and the card holders can choose English for operation. According to the relevant provisions of China and Portugal, the maximum volume of cash withdrawal for CUP card per time is 300 euro and equivalence euro to 5000 RMB per day.
