On January 26th, China UnionPay held a ceremony in Cairo together with EBC Company, the unique national ATM network operator in Egypt to announce gradual opening of CUP card acceptance business via “123” ATM network under EBC. CUP card can be used for more than 90% ATM machines in Egypt and all ATM machines in Sudan to withdraw local currency.
The cooperation between China UnionPay and National Bank of Egypt can date back to June 2007 when CUP card acceptance business via ATM machine was opened in Egypt. The cooperation with EBC Company this time is not only the major breakthrough for acceptance business of CUP card in Egypt and Sudan, but also the first time for CUP card to realize general acceptance in African regional market, indicating that CUP card acceptance business in Africa gradually enters into a new stage of in-depth development and comprehensive coverage while constantly exploring the blank market.

Established in 1996, EBC (Egyptian Banks Co. for Technological Advancement) is controlled by Central Bank of Egypt. “123” network operated under the charge of EBC is the unique national ATM network in Egypt, with most banks in Egypt as its members. At present “123” network covers more than 3,500 units of ATMs, accounting for above 95% of the total in Egypt, all of which are posted with the acceptance logo in “123” typeface.
